Patch 9001 — Java 17 and Tomcat 10 (V7)

The runtime migration patch for the XPLG V7 server: moves every instance to Java 17 and Tomcat 10, keeps a full backup for rollback, and is required by every current build.

What you will do: move a V7 deployment that still runs Java 8 to Java 17 and Tomcat 10, so it can take the current patches.

For security, stability and performance XPLG runs on a current Java and Tomcat. Minor updates ship inside ordinary releases; the move to a major version shipped as a dedicated patch, 9001. Since then every build (7.9813, 7.9858, 7.9859) requires Java 17 and Tomcat 10 and fails to deploy on an older runtime.

Check the Java version

PortX > System > System Health, section System Information, field Java Version, on every node of a cluster. A value below 17 means the patch is needed.

Prerequisites

  • At least 3 GB of free local disk on every machine that runs XPLG.
  • A valid V7 license (PortX > Settings > License).
  • Linux services: stop the XPLG service on each machine and run each instance manually from its installation directory (sh runXpoLog.sh start) for the duration of the update; stop it the same way (sh runXpoLog.sh stop) and start the services again when the update is verified.
  • Load balancer: publish by browsing directly to one node (any node), then publish to the cluster.

Apply the patch

  1. Download the patch for your platform (Windows or Linux; all deployments are 64-bit). Do not extract the zip.
  2. PortX > System > About > Publish Patch, all nodes selected.
  3. Verify: About lists patch 9001; System Health > System Information shows Java 17 on every node.

After verification

XPLG keeps a full backup for rollback. Run for a few days, then on every installation keep the single jre directory (Java 17), remove any other jre* directories and delete java8_backup.

Roll back

  1. Stop every XPLG service.
  2. On each installation delete ant, collection, conf, defaultroot, jre, knowledge, lib, plugins, ServletContainer and the lax file (XpoLog.lax / XpoLog.sh.lax) from the installation directory.
  3. Copy everything from INSTALL_DIR/java8_backup/patch_<timestamp>/ back into the installation directory.
  4. Start the service; repeat per installation. Verify that About no longer lists 9001 and System Information shows Java 8.
